Government of India exempts gifts up to Rs 5,000
Any gifts worth up to Rs 5,000 and sent from abroad are exempted by the government. The Chinese companies have allegedly been doing this, according to a report by The Times of India.
Products cheaper on Chinese sites because they got exemption from duties
Since the goods were being sent as gifts, products on Ali Express, Shien, were being sold cheaper than Indian e-commerce sites.
There’s no MRP displayed on the packages sent by Chinese e-tailers
Another allegation that has been levelled against Chinese shopping sites is that they don’t display maximum retial price on the boxes. According to the Packaged Commodities Rules 2017, it is mandatory to display maximum retail price (MRP).
Government may restrict number of gifts sent to four
Sources told Times of India that government may instruct India Post, which collects duty on imported good, to allow just four gifts being sent to one address in a year.
India Post will also set up export hubs
In order to give a boost to Indian companies, India Post may also set up 20 export hubs.
